I had cystic acne for about two years before antibiotics finally cleared my skin up, which means now I have lots of hyper-pigmentation spots as well as scars and occasional re-breakouts to deal with. I've made peace with the fact that my skin is never going to be perfectly smooth and even, but hey, sometimes you want to have that illusion.
As a result, I've been in search of my holy grail concealer, something that will give me full coverage but not move, cake, or oxidise, and, most importantly, is available in a pale neutral or cool undertone... Easier said than done when you're on a budget!
Glamoflauge is a product that at first I hated, and felt it didn't live up to all the hype over it, but when I gave it a second chance, I fell in love with it.
This is a product you're either going to love or hate. It's VERY full coverage, VERY thick, and available in just a few shades that cater more to the pale―normally I wear the palest shade in drugstore lines (110 in Maybelline Fit Me, for reference), but my match in this concealer is actually the Medium-Light, not Light or Ultra-Light. If I tan a bit more, I'd actually need the Medium. It has neutral undertones, and while it looks greyish in the tube it blends very naturally on the skin.
The main reason I disliked this in the first place is that I was hoping for something to cover my dark under-eye circles.... Big mistake! The concealer is way too thick and heavy for under-eye concealing. It creased like crazy, even when set with powder and over a primer, and wore off horribly (I looked like I was wearing makeup applied by a six year old!).
But while I'll stick to another concealer for my dark circles, I did fall in love with it over blemishes and acne scars. One small dot from the squeeze tube is all I need to cover all my problem spots perfectly. This stuff is seriously opaque: as an experiment I decided to use it to conceal a bruise on my knee, and, well, you can see the results of just two layers of Glamoflauge. Of course my legs are more tan than my face and therefore it's not a perfect job, but I'm sure if I kept layering, I could have made the bruise vanish. It's very blendable, which is good, because this concealer needs to be, or else it will get cakey and just sit on top of skin. It's easy to use too much concealer, too, which also causes it to cake, but once you get used to it you won't have any problems.
The primary ingredient in Glamoflague is petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly, which it smells like. The scent isn't very strong, and I got used to it, but it may bother some. As with most petrolatum based concealers, it needs to be set with a powder. Be careful if you have dry skin as it'll accentuate any dry patches (moisturising beforehand does help somewhat). I don't know what causes this, but I find that only my talc-based Essence All About Matt! powder will completely set this, and silica-based powders do nothing. I like to squeeze out the concealer onto the back of my hand and pat it on with my fingers, blend with a damp beauty blender sponge, and then use a small eyeshadow brush of powder to set it.
In terms of wear, I can get about six hours out of this before I feel like it needs to be touched up. If I'm using it as a foundation over a primer (Benefit's Porefessional) and set it properly, I have managed over eight hours of good coverage, including the time I wore this to my high school prom!
But while Glamoflauge may not be my holy grail concealer, it is a holy grail item for another reason: when mixed in equal parts with moisturiser or lotion, it becomes an absolutely perfect full coverage foundation that I now swear by. I love it! I have this pre-mixed in a small plastic container now, though I used to mix on the back of my hand. I use a paddle foundation brush to apply, followed by a damp beauty blender to blend it. You only need a bit of this mix, just like with the concealer itself: I only have to dip the tip of my brush into my container to get enough for a full face.
Hard Candy Glamoflauge concealer costs about $6 at Wal-Mart, and can be ordered online here It has a black and clear squeeze tube (my favorite for liquid concealers, as it's more sanitary) and is packaged in a sealed plastic box with a tiny concealer pencil that I find totally useless. It isn't exactly the fanciest packaging, but it certainly works. I certainly can't see myself running out of this for the next six months or so, either since you only need a little and the tube is so big.
If you need a concealer for blemishes, scars, or hyper-pigmentation, and can find a shade that works for you, then Glamoflague is going to be your new best friend.
