In the spirit of summer and my upcoming collection, I have been planning to try a "desert" look! What I came up with is a beautiful and clean cut "Geisha lost in the desert on the brink of starvation" thing!
ACHIEVING THE LOOK
First of all, start out with a light moisturizer. I like this Clean and Clear Oil-Free one due to its lightweight feel and salicylic acid content!
Next, apply a full coverage matte foundation in a thin layer all over the skin using a flat foundation brush. The one I used is Rimmel's Stay Matte "Liquid Mousse" in the shade 103.
Before moving on to color and shading, I suggest setting the liquid with a matte pressed powder foundation. The MAC Studio Fix adds a little extra coverage while setting in a matte finish.
Now for contouring! Use an angled brush to chisel in those features. Since we are going for a "On the brink of starvation" look, use a sharp line under the cheekbones and chin, and blend downward to soften. Use sharp lines on either side of the bridge of the nose blended towards the apples of the cheeks to add dimension. Lightly brush the contour shade onto the temples of the forehead to give warmth. This Natural Bronzer by Rimmel is great due to its matte finish! When contouring, matte shades are best because shimmer will attract light to the area applied, which is the opposite of what is desired!
To give a sense that you aren't already dead (just on your way towards it), I suggest adding a touch of mauve blush to the cheekbones. The one I used is called In Love by Chanel. It smells lovely!
Now, just to polish of the complexion, brush your brows upward to make them look less crazy. After all, even a dying geisha has to look put together!
Onto the eyes, use a matte white cream shadow on the brow bone, under-eye strip, and upper lash line, connecting the lines drawn above and below the eye at the outer corner. Blend the lines for a softer look. I like to think of this as the only part of the white geisha makeup that has not melted off; a piece of who they once were! This particular white shadow from NYX (in the shade, "Milk") is in stick-form which makes this particular look easily achievable!
This step is not imperative to the look. Add a touch of brown mascara to the upper lashes to open up the eyes. This Covergirl Clump Crusher one is great for lash definition!
Last but not least, the lips. Use a creamy rose mauve shade on the center portions of both the upper and lower lips, then apply a matte shade similar to your skin tone to the outer corners of the upper and lower lips, blending inward towards the rose mauve for a gradient! Often the way lips are colored and shaped can affect how the entire look is perceived! Bare lips can show bravery; a rounded shape can show sincerity; etc. Here, the colored center and skin-tone corner gives a feminine and parched feel to the look! The mauve color is Chanel Rouge Coco in shade 05 and the matte nude color is Rimmel Lasting Finish By Kate in shade 113.
I really enjoyed putting this together for you all and hope you can take inspiration from this for more wearable everyday looks, or even more "editorial" special occasion looks!
